Yesterday and Today
Yesterday and Today sheds light on extreme situations from the communist period in Romania, five scenes in which death “lies” at every turn or in which the extreme gesture of suicide sometimes becomes a method of salvation from an environment in which order is under the sign of terror. The show also consists of five intermezzo moments bearing the touch of a wooden, inconsistent, but persuasive language specific to totalitarian systems. We are dealing with two former communists, two writers, two teachers, two prisoners, a torturer and a leader in conflict with an apparent voice of conscience. The above-mentioned are subjected to physical or psychological terror (sometimes with serious consequences, schizophrenia) on the one hand, and on the other hand we witness attempts to escape from the gray reality or to dream of a more peaceful world. The situations do not offer the possibility of intimacy or personal space, in a context where, paradoxically, only a thin wall or a glass separates or connects you from your neighbors.
